Our story

A story of love
At Scentsy, we love fragrance and how it makes us feel, how it connects us to our deepest memories, and how sharing those memories connects us with each other. What started in 2004 as Heidi and Orville Thompson’s “swing for the fences” moment to change their own lives through wickless candles and decorative warmers has grown into an international business opportunity with a culture that feels like family.
At Scentsy, I love yous are common, hugs are expected and our biggest annual event is called a family reunion.
We are passionate about what we do, because in sharing fragrance we are changing lives – here in Idaho and in every community we serve.

Value to the world
Inspired by Orville’s favorite Albert Einstein quote and a desire to contribute more to the lives of others than we take, we are committed to bringing value to the world in everything we do.
In the beginning, adding value to the world was as much aspiration as inspiration. (Hey, in 2004 Heidi and Orville were mixing wax in slow cookers in a shipping container.) But they worked really hard to meet or exceed every expectation.
Today, we still work really hard to meet or exceed expectations through the flexible business opportunity we bring to 11 countries, the cool workplaces and generous benefits we offer our employees and our "contribute more than you take" philosophy.

Industry leading
Did we mention starting out in a shipping container in 2004? A 40-foot shipping container on a sheep farm in Meridian, Idaho, to be exact. We were a family-run business back then, with the Thompsons and their family and friends working around the clock to get Scentsy off the ground.
Heidi remembers driving home late one evening, tearfully telling Orville that summer was over and they hadn’t seen a single sunset.
Industry leading was a basic expectation. The Thompsons believed the best way forward was to lead, in direct selling and in the fragrance industry. Today, we work in 770,000 square feet of office, manufacturing, warehouse and distribution space on the most beautiful 73-acre campus in Meridian, Idaho. (We think it’s the coolest workplace in the state.) And when we work late in the summer, the sunset views are spectacular.

Family-friendly business opportunity
From the beginning, Scentsy has been a family-friendly business. For years, Heidi and Orville’s five kids were in the office all the time.
Heidi and Orville joke that Grace, their youngest, learned to read by helping her grandma and grandpa, Alice and Fred, to label Scentsy Bars.
But family-friendly goes deeper than this. Heidi and Orville always believed that being part of Scentsy should empower not just the Consultant, but the Consultant’s family, to grow, achieve goals and make the world a better place through relationships, old and new. This philosophy is at the core of everything we do at Scentsy, from the affordability of becoming a Consultant to our generous compensation plan.
We aren’t just a company started by a family. We are a business opportunity made for families.

Creative, artistic, high-quality products
Heidi and Orville and Scentsy’s earliest Consultants started out selling wickless candles (scented wax cubes), designed to be melted in Scentsy warmers (decorative vessels that melt the wax with the heat of a light bulb or a heating element).
Since 2004, our products have proudly displayed a seal of authenticity that is the hallmark of best-in-the-world design and production.
We never take the middle ground when it comes to design, development or production. That’s not where creativity, artisanship and exacting quality are found.
Since 2004, we’ve expanded well beyond warmers and wickless candles, but our meticulous standards, solid product guarantee and Scentsy-style translation of fragrance and home décor trends have never wavered. We love making innovative and totally original products that delight our customers and Consultants season after season.

Warm the heart
From the very beginning, Heidi and Orville were blown away by the kindness, generosity and hard work of early Consultants who pitched in to help get the company off the ground. This generosity inspired them to give more to the community and the world as a whole, in appreciation of those Consultants and in honor of Scentsy’s mission statement.
A continuous spiral of generosity quickly became an uplifting part of Scentsy’s culture.
In 2009, Heidi and Orville formalized this contribute more than you take philosophy when they created a program (called the Scentsy Family Foundation at the time) to help Consultants, employees and customers contribute to Scentsy’s mission through the sale of Charitable Cause products, scholarships and direct donations. This program complements our culture of generosity that touches all that we do.

Enliven the senses
Heidi fell in love with Scentsy when Orville brought it home for her to try. The first time she warmed a Banana Nut Bread Scentsy Bar, Orville came in and asked what was baking because the house smelled so good. 😊
Fragrance connects us to our deepest emotions and our most powerful memories. It creates connections when those emotions and memories are shared.
Fragrance can be mouthwatering, soft, playful, energizing (to name a few). Combined with the artistic beauty and light of a warmer or diffuser, it adds an unexpected kiss 😘 to an ordinary day.
Today, we love to connect people to their memories and each other through 100+ fragrances and 100+ warmers, diffusers and portable scent systems (plus dozens of cleaning, personal care and kids products) that enliven their senses, even if there isn’t a loaf of banana nut bread in the oven.

Inspire the soul
In 2004, Heidi told Orville “We are going to swing for the fence, and swing really hard” rather than declare bankruptcy. From that determination, Scentsy was born.
Because of that determination, Scentsy has thrived. As a company, we achieve goals and set new, bigger ones. We celebrate successes, but are never satisfied that we have arrived. We create the best products and the best path to business ownership for our customers and Consultants, respectively. But we are also something more.
We are a community of contributors, inspired and encouraged to be our most authentic selves. We share the best of who we are across boundaries of teams and even across oceans. We live with Scentsy Spirit, a feeling of love, acceptance, generosity and community that is palpable when we are together as a Scentsy family.
We know our story is just beginning. Maybe it’s time for you to join us. (We think it is!)
